Since the head of the weed eater turns it is very easy to control where you cut. We have a lot of small areas that require lots of use from this machine and it has made it much easier and quicker to get done.

Although the first trimmer I received was non-functional, due to carb issues, the replacement exceeds my expectations. I bought the blower and the edger attachments as well, and they are excellent as well, especially the blower, my only gripe with the blower is it doesn't have a tube which allows for forward blowing, I fashioned one myself quite easily, it makes using it in tight places easier. I think one should be provided considering the price of the unit with the attachments. This trimmer is lightweight and easy to maneuver, it starts very easily as long as you follow the directions printed on the handle. It cuts through tall grass with ease, without the back fatigue I experienced with my hand held.

It does go through the lighter line very fast, and changing the line the first few times is challenging until you get the hang of it. What's nice is no tools needed to do it. All in all, a very good unit.

Soon the trimmer line broke off from both sides of the cutting head. Found it difficult to removed the broken pieces of the trimmer line from the head. I do no plan on using this product to cut grass but to trim the grass along my house in in the ditch along the street, that is 200' in length. Removed the Southland supplied trimmer head and installed a WW Ezlock trimmer head that uses. 105 trimmer line and provides for quick line replacement. Using the alternate cutting head made the machine much more user friendly in my application.

The gas oil mixture is easy to do, I think it's a 10:1 ratio. I found it easy to push around and get into all the places I wanted to trim. Mostly edge work and tight spaces that my mower can't reach.

I was pleasantly surprised at the apparent quality of this string mower, edger, and blower system. The various heads attach to the power unit with a unique lever and mechanical stop arrangement, which makes changing the heads very easy. The blower head is great accessory for the Southland string trimmer, especially for driveways and walkways.

It also did an acceptable job pushing dry leaves off my grass, however it is under powered for heavy wet leaves. I cannot speak to long term durability but first impression is very good. The blower head adjust from a 90 degree left side discharge to a 45 degree left discharge. It would be nice to be able to get a 0 degree straight forward adjustment also. With the head set for the 90 degree left discharge the unit did an excellent job of cleaning up a driveway that had been edged and trimmed. The 45 degree setting was used to clean up along a decorative wall, this is where a 0 degree setting would have been nice. This could be accomplished by making a right angle or 45 degree angle nozzle attachment. Having the angled nozzle would really make this an ideal 5 star blower system. With the edger and trimmer heads, this becomes the complete system to handle those long walkway and driveway trimming, edging, and cleanup tasks. This is an attachment for the Model SWSTM4317 Trimmer only, not a universal fit item. The leaf blower comes assembled with the exception of the exhaust chute, which pops on and is tightened and adjusted with a wing nut. Changing the cutter head for the blower head is quite simple as well (figure 1). Release the shaft clamp by pulling up (figure2 and 3), raise and hold the release latch (figure 4), Slide the cutter head off and blower head on. The latch will pull into place by a spring, and push the outer shaft clamp down on top of the latch (figure6).

If the blower housing still tries to rotate, turn the clamp handle a turn clockwise and try again. It will require some wiggling to get the cutter head off and you must turn the blower some to align the driveshaft splines. If you want to change the direction of the air outlet, the whole power unit swivels about 35 degrees clockwise (Figure 8). It is not the season for leaves to blow but this unit sure does clear the sidewalks and driveway of sand.

The only drawback I found with this unit is the ground height of the blower housing and the ground. The blower is great for smooth sidewalks and driveways, but the blower housing will bottom out on almost any obstructions. What a tool, this thing is a monster and eats weeds and grass like it was nothing. It has power to spare. I like the rear cutting guard. It allows you to see what you are getting into before you get there.

I like the fact that you can change the heads on it so easy. Mine came with a blower attachment and it will blow debris away like a tornado. It is easy to get around trees and other objects that are around the place when weed eating. I have a very large grove of trees and it is easy to get in the trees and trim around them.

I picked up this 17' 43CC gas walk behind string trimmer mower, by Southland, because of the versatility in uses. I have a fairly large yard with native grasses and brush. I also got the leaf blower attachment and edger for a complete system. The trimmer/mower was easily assembled in a short time by myself, but two people would have made it a bit easier.

I found that assemble step D, mounting the wheels, before step B. Mounting the cutter head, made the process go better. Read the instructions fully before starting the assembly process. There are a few tricks, like proper cable routing, that help. The different heads are attached by a latch and a clamp, with no tools needed. All of the attachments are shaft and gear driven, rather that the belt system used by most other manufacturers. The cutting head that is included with the trimmer/mower is well built and slips on the power unit with a slight twist of the head to align the shaft splines.

The power unit swivels on it's carrier to assist in trimming closer to trees, shrubs, fences and sidewalks. The swivel lever is on the right upper handle and pulls a pin up, via a cable.

The power head also changes angle for sculptured trimming. Starting was fairly easy after pushing the primer bulb several times to fill the carburetor with fuel. The primer bulb is located under the carburetor and forward of the fuel lines (see image 2).

The engine guns a bit rich, mixture wise. At the altitude of my house, but running is not adjustable by the owner. This fuel mixture issue is true with all gasoline engines of recent manufacture due to Federal Emissions Regulations. The unit cuts well in tall bear grass and brush. Just don't rush it, let the cutting line ends do the work.

The engine appears to be rubber mounted and there is very little vibration in the handles. The only gripe I have is a small one concerning the placement of the swivel lever. It is on the right upper handle and I have hit my right knee on it twice so far. I plan to move the lever farther down the handle in the near future.

I've got a 180 mph electric that seems like way more... Maybe it's the lack of precise direction control? It IS much quieter than my electric, so that's nice. It also has a higher cfm than my electric, 525 vs 424, but not sure how that translates in this case.

The 520 CFM this attachment creates will cover most blowing needs without the 40 plus pounds of weight on your back. It is great for driveways and walkways. It also did an acceptable job pushing leaves off my grass. Light to medium jobs only in my case.

It pushed light debris off the concrete for about 5-6 feet, and leaves on the grass for about 2-3 feet. It saved me time on the concrete but not on the grass. It is easy to push and does save my back. It does not blow out at 170 MPH but nothing at this price will. It is well made and easy to install on the wheeled string mower.

Please note that it only blows to the left of the unit so changing direction requires a plan. I start in the middle and work towards the sides. When you first mount it, it's crooked. Then, using the trimmer's 30 degrees to the right capability, the edger is straight, & off to the right side...

You definitely have to heed the instructions & use it when the ground is dry... I switched from dry to moist, & it immediately started clogging up. Also, the light weight of the trimmer doesn't help the edger... You have to battle it a bit to control it. This mower far exceeded my expectations.

Definitely a nice addition to my yard machines. I have been looking at a wheeled blower to help with all the leaves in my yard. Using a backpack or hand held blower is a challenge.

Using this attachment on the Wheeled string trimmer mower is perfect. It has enough airflow to blow the leaves. And, blowing closer to the ground is much more efficient and getting the leaves moved.

And being an attachment on a wheeled string trimmer mower I don't have a large blower sitting around most of the year. I can use the string trimmer mower most of the year for trimming, especially the ditches by the road.

Oh well I have a pretty good assortment of various string trimmers to compare the performance of this Southland 43cc walk behind to and all I can say is it is totally different animal in several ways. Has the versatility of a hand held trimmer, but it.. Has the versatility of a hand held trimmer, but it is easy and clean to use. No sloping shoulder, no wearing grass clippings, no vibration a lot less noise.

Runs smooth easy to assemble very quiet and easy to use. Handle is a weak point as it attaches to the unit as it hops and Wobbles when pushing across the yard. I feel where they handle attaches could use some beefing up as it is a weak point. The handle also is short for a person of 6 ft or taller.

It does not relieved back strain with this short of a handle. A 4 to 6 inch built-in adjustment would make a world of difference.

Aside from the handle length and attachment to the unit the product is an awesome much needed concept for the industry.
